tvOS and the Apple TV App Store: Free apps dominate

Three weeks ago, we launched AppLovin’s SDK for the tvOS platform. Already, apps have launched with the AppLovin SDK, enabling publishers and advertisers to monetize and grow their businesses.

Earlier this week, our friends at appFigures provided a fantastic breakdown of the early days of the Apple TV App Store. There is tremendous momentum in the number of apps submitted and approved, and it’s no surprise that games are leading the pack of non-streaming entertainment apps. 

Early on, we also see a clear trend in app pricing. The overwhelming majority of apps are free or $0.99.

It will be interesting to watch how this progresses, but it’s pretty clear that publishers are looking for other ways to monetize besides charging upfront.

On the same day the appFigures report was posted, Apple SVP Eddy Cue told Buzzfeed: “What we’re seeing with the new Apple TV is to me very similar to what happened with gaming on the iPhone.”

Cue’s excitement about the tvOS platform matches that of most developers we speak to, and we are happy to provide our SDK to enable the app ecosystem to flourish for publishers and advertisers alike.
